EVM; Is BJP trying to hijack 2024 Lok sabha elections?
With India's Lok sabha elections around the corner, the issue of election tampering by BJP has come to light. With fair and free election being the soul of democracy, election tampering is viewed as an attack on democracy itself.
On January 30, 2024, Chandigarh mayor elections were held. The chief presiding officer of Election commission of India(ECI) declared BJP candidate for mayor has won with 16 votes while opposing India alliance candidate got 12 votes. It was alleged that 8 Votes which were polled to the opposition candidate where rejected as invalid by the Chief presiding officer without any valid reasons. The video of Election commission's officer rejecting the votes in favour of BJP candidate became viral in Internet. Meanwhile, BJP candidate was sworn in as Mayor in Chandigarh.
Opposition took the issue to the Supreme court. During the hearing, Chief justice observed that the Chief preceding officer of ECI worked in favour of BJP candidate by deliberately rejecting the votes of opposition parties. So, the Supreme court rejected the earlier result of BJP candidate being the mayor and declared AAP candidate as victorious.
The issue has become important that the tampering of votes has happened in broad daylight in the presence of so many CCTV cameras. This has raised the eyebrows of any civilized citizens and made them aware that elections in the world's largest democracy could be tampered in broad daylight. It is important to note that Chief Presiding officer of Chandigarh mayor polls, Anil Masih, was a BJP leader.
Electric Voting machines(EVM) used in Indian elections are manufactured by Bharat electrics Limited(BEL) and Electronics Corporation of India Limited(ECIL), public sector companies under Union Government of India.
Source code of EVM is also called brain of EVMs. The source code is a program that tells the EVM machine how to function. If the source code could be tampered, then election results could also be easily tampered. The Status Paper on EVM says, "The source code of EVMs is developed by a selected group of engineers at BEL and ECIL independently from each other. This selected software development group of few engineers design and develop the source code".
RTI shows that seven people have been nominated as Independent Directors to BEL, by Government of India. Out of them, four independent directors are office bearers of BJP. This raises the serous question of conflict of interest within the functioning of BEL which manufactures EVMs. This is also unconstitutional and illegal.
Former secretary of Government of India, EAS Sharma has written a letter about the same. Click here to read it.
He added, "What disturbs me all the more is that the Election Commission, apparently not fully realising its role as a Constitutional authority and as the custodian for conducting elections in a free and fair manner, have closed their eyes to this and openly become a party to the ruling political party inducting four of its representatives to run the affairs of the BEL. Does it not imply that the ECI no longer considers itself to be an independent Constitutional authority?"
The highly secret source code of EVM developed by BEL is sent to foreign companies to integrate it with the microcontroller of EVM. This raises a serious questions whether the software could be tampered easily with torjan in foreign land. When asked these question in RTI, it was said by concerned government officials that it could not be answered.
Now, Can we stop BJP from hijacking 2024 Lok sabha elections? Can we save the democracy?
Its upto Election commission and Supreme Court to answer. But, they have categorically remained silent on this issue.
