Creating a Mentally ill Society by GM Mustard


Modi led Union Government of India, under GEAC (Genetically Engineering Appraisal committee) has said in Supreme court that it wanted to release its Herbicide tolerant Genetically modifed Mustard. It means it wanted to bypass all regulation to introduce GM mustard for commercial cultivation among farmers. If allowed, GM mustard will be the first genetically modified food in India. This genetically modified technology was initially patented by Bayer, a Agribussiness multinational company. 


This GM Mustard has introduced three foreign genes into the DNA of mustard. Gene is the basic unit which is responsible to expression of character in all living beings. These gene are artificially inserted into Mustard inside laboratory to get desired outcomes. One gene is to create male-sterility.


Another gene named ''bar" is introduced into the mustard. This is done for achieving tolerance to glyphosinate, a herbicide. When this herbicide is sprayed on GM Mustard, all other plants and microbes die except Bt Mustard. That is its specialty. Again the same multinational company, Bayer sells huge volume of herbicides globally and makes profit out of it.


A new peer-reviewed Study released by a group of scientists in Taiwan has revealed an astonishingly strong link between severe depression, cognitive decline and exposure to herbicide, glyphosate. The study was fully published in the highly respected Elsevier Journal, Environmental Research.


"The study provides important evidence of an association between urinary glyphosate levels and adverse neurological outcomes in a representative cohort of U.S. adult population. It was observed lower cognitive function scores, greater odds of severe depressive symptoms, and increased risk of serious hearing difficulty in individuals with higher glyphosate exposure", scientist concluded.

There are some more studies that suggests glyphosate as neurotoxins (toxic to the nervous system). Neurological diseases in humans include Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and some forms of depression. Neurodevelopmental toxicity to the growing foetus or to babies can result in autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD).


When Genetically Engineered Herbicide tolerant Mustard is introduced in India, every consumer of Mustard and Mustard oil will be met with increased exposure of herbicides that are bound to create adverse neurological impacts on all people eating Mustard in India.


Experts say that there are safer technologies to improve the yield of Mustard like System of Mustard Intensification (SRI) than herbicide tolerant BT Mustard.


India has hundreds of indigenous nutrition rich mustard seeds. The introduction of GM Mustard will be determintal to our indigenous mustard seeds and nutrition security of our country. Also, no one knows or studied the impacts of GM mustard on bio-diversity. Experts warns the effect will be determental to already endangered indigenous mustard seeds.
